Should pastors influence their congregations in politics?

Should pastors influence their congregations in politics? This has been a vigorously debated topic recently. Some pastors directly support some candidates, while others completely refrain from engaging in any political issues. So what does God's Word say about a pastor's responsibility? Titus 1:9 tells us that a pastor shall "hold fast the faithful word [the Bible] as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict." A pastor has the responsibility of... Read More

Do Christians need to be involved in government?

Do Christians need to be involved in government? God ordained three institutions: the home, the church, and the government. It is inconceivable to me that God would ordain government and then tell His people to stay out of it any more than He would ordain the family and then tell us not to get involved. We need to pray that God will raise up righteous leaders. When people tell us to stay out of politics, they are usually reacting to one extreme or the other. We need to be clear about what... What are my rights as a Christian in the political process?

What are my rights as a Christian in the political process? You are wise to be asking this type of question. Two passages come to mind: 1 Peter 2:13-17 and Romans 13:1-7. We must submit, as our Lord tells us to do. We are never more like Satan when we are rebellious and never more like Jesus when we are submissive. God does not release power to rebels. If you teach people about their rights, you have a revolution. If you teach people about their responsibilities, you’ll have a revival. We... Read More

If God is sovereign, why should I vote?

If God is sovereign, why should I vote? You should vote because Jesus commanded you to vote! In Matthew 22:21, the Lord said, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” We tend to focus on the second half of that command. But Jesus said we are to “render to Caesar,” and I believe the failure to vote is a transgression of that command. Part of our work is to be salt and light. Whether our candidate wins or loses, the election is not... Read More

What can we do to help bring our nation back to God?

What can we do to help bring our nation back to God? It’s not too late. Notice the prayer of the patriot in Psalm 80:14: “Return, we beseech Thee, O God of hosts; look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine. And the vineyard which Thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that Thou madest strong for Thyself.” What can you do? Look up. Notice Psalm 80:19: “Turn us again, O Lord God of Hosts, cause Thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.” We need to return to God with fasting,... Read More

Is patriotism going to solve the problems in our country?

Is patriotism going to solve the problems in our country? American patriotism has been stirred from a long nap. Unfortunately it required the cries of thousands to stir us from our collective slumber. Regardless, it is good to see many once self-centered Americans rallied to a greater cause. As a country we are re-examining our priorities and, more importantly, our faith. Naval Commander Stephen Decatur once said in 1816, “Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations, may she always... Read More
